Senior Golfer Moves on to Regionals
Although the Riverview High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams did not advance past Districts last week, RVHS senior Katelyn Gaztambide was able to pull through and qualify for the FHSAA Region Girls Golf Tournament. Gaztambide accomplished this with a sub-100 score of 98 strokes.
“I’m really excited about qualifying. It was my goal for the season,” said Gaztambide.
Gaztambide put in the work to reach her goal. She would often stay late after practice or even after matches to continue working and improving on her stroke.
“It was exciting watching her play in Districts. They had webcams set up so I could watch it all and it just made it really fun,” said RVHS girls golf coach Cody Slater.
Sadly, this does mean the end of the golf season for the boys’ team and rest of the girls’ team. Overall, the RVHS golf team had a good season despite having so many matches canceled due to Hurricane Irma and other reasons. “(The team) was a good group of young boys and shot really well,” said RVHS boys golf coach Ron Slater. According to Cody Slater, “It was a fun year and the (girls’) team did good.”
Gaztambide will be participating in the FHSAA Region Girls Golf Tournament on Oct. 25 at Lakewood National Golf Club at 8:30 a.m.
