Sports Overview

Wrestling

The RVHS Wrestling team is off to a good start on its season. During Winter Break, the squad captured the District Duals championship for the second consecutive year, the first team in the county to win it twice in a row. The Sharks posted a team record 15-0 in this year’s dual competition. Also, the team placed second in the Graves Invitational in mid-December.

According to the coaching staff, some honorable mentions go out to Josh Guerra, who is currently ranked first in state; his record is 14-1 with eight pins; Lane Keck, who is undefeated with a record of 22-0; Chris Felix, who also is undefeated at 18-0 and Oscar Hernandez, with a record of 23-1 and leads the team in pins with 17. The coaches also recognized Nico Hernandez, who has a record of 21-3 as a freshman.

Girl's Basketball

The Riverview High School girls’ basketball team started last week off on the wrong foot, falling at Alonso 52-39. According to head coach Gerard Batista, Stephanie Garcia was the player of the game. She came off the bench with 16 points, including four 3-point shots.

Batista stated that they were unable to make shots or layups early in the game, putting the Sharks down 13 points, and were never able to make up the difference.

Two days later, however, The Sharks resumed their winning ways, dominating Gaither at the Cowboys’ gym 56-10.

Batista stated, “It was a good all-around team effort. Everyone was able to score and we played well together. We came out aggressive and shared the ball well.”
